Segment Strategy
This article will explain all about how to set up and use segments to send highly targeted messages to your subscribers
What are segments?
Segments are essentially a way to "tag" each of the subscribers in your list. By "tagging" a subscriber as belonging to a certain segment, you can effectively create a sub-list and send special campaigns to only that sub-list.
Why should I use segments?
The key to successful email campaigns is sending information and offers that your subscribers are interested in. By using segments you can start to create a profile of your customers' interests and send special campaigns to only the segment(s) of your list who are interested in the campaign. For instance, your regular campaigns offering a coupon or special offer might be suitable to send to your entire list. But you might want to send campaigns emphasizing your catering services to only subscribers that belong to your "Catering" segment.
Essentially, segments allow you create and send highly targeted campaigns to only the subscribers who have expressed interest in a specific type of message. Targeting means higher response rates and lower unsubscribe rates since your subscribers are getting exactly the type of messages they are interested in.
How do I set up segments?
When you add or edit a list you will see the option to enter segments 1-15. An empty input area next to one of those segments means that the segment has not been labelled and activated yet. If you see a label next to the segment that means the segment has been labelled and activated.
In order to set up segments all you need to do is enter a label (like "Catering", "Sales Reps", "Specials", etc) in each of the text boxes next to the available segments. It is important to think carefully about the segment names and how you want to use them. You cannot edit them after entering them (unless you make a special request to our support team).
Setting up segments, Step 2
The segments are useless until you tag each of the subscribers that belong to the segment. Now that you've added your segment names, each subscriber's details page will have checkboxes with the names of each segment that you set up. Simply check the box next to each segment that the subscriber should be long to. Subscribers can belong to one, some or all of your segments.
Sending a campaign to a segment
Now that your segments have been set up and your subscribers have been tagged, you are ready to send a campaign to any segment you want. On the campaign creation screen, simply check the boxes of each segment you want to send to. Only subscribers belonging to at least one of the selected segments will receive your campaign.
This sounds like a lot of work!
Using segments isn't as much work as it might sound like from this rather long-winded article! It's not as bad as it seems. Our control panel makes everything really easy to manage and you'll get the hang of it quickly. The hardest part is making sure you ask your customers which segments they are interested in and tagging them accordingly. It takes diligence to stay on top of your customers' interests but your efforts will be rewarded with higher response rates and lower unsubscription rates.
